July 2014 Boxycharm Overview

girlwithglamJuly 19, 2014

boxycharm Another surprise this week was the arrival of my Boxycharm box! This is another beauty subscription box; however, the cost of this box is $21 a month with free shipping. Unless you live in Florida, like me, then unfortunately you have to pay taxes. The perks about this box is that there are no sample sizes!!! Every single product in this box is always full size and the total value of the products in the July Box is $128. This month Boxycharm only released three sneak peeks on their Instagram so I was still in the dark about two of the items in the box, so I was super excited to what they were.

  • Pur~lisse Pur~Protect SPF 30 Moisturizer (Value $55)
  • Lauren B. Beauty Nail Polish in Rodeo Drive (Value $18)

  • Bellápierre Shimmer Powder in Gold & Brown
  • Bellápierre Natural Lip Liner in Nude

The two items that were not announced by Boxycharm on their Instagram were the Shimmer Powder & Natural Lip Liner both by Bellápierre. The lip liner is a nice pinky nude as the shade suggests but the only thing I don’t like is that it is a wooden lip liner. I’ve noticed that some wooden liners tend to be too rough on my lips rather than the twist up liners but I do like this nude color so I’m going to give it a try. In addition, I noticed that some wooden liners seem to not have amazing color payoffs and you usually need to do a couple of swaps to get the color to be opaque. The shimmer powder has a deceiving color when you look at it in the container because it looks like a very sheer rose; yet, it’s supposed to be a Gold/Brown color. When I swatched the powder on the back of my hand, it did look gold but again very sheer and after one swatch I realized that there’s no way this powder would last on the lids for more than an hour without a good primer. Even if this shimmer is applied with a long lasting primer, I honestly do not think it will last too long compared to most other eyeshadows.

As for the Appeal Cosmetics lipstick, I did not like the shade I received because it’s another pinky nude but with blue undertones. When I tried it on I could feel how drying the formula was and I just felt that the shade basically “washed me out.” I even tried to pair it with a light pink lipgloss to try and dim the blue undertones but it was to no avail. The color still didn’t look as great as I would’ve hoped. I wish the lipstick were the same shade of the Lauren B. Beauty nail polish but oh well! Anyway, I hate nail polish so I’ll be gifting that to my mother or aunt. Also, my face is extremely sensitive to different lotions and moisturizers so I will be putting the Pur~lisse moisturizer in my swap pile for safe measures. Don’t want any breakouts you know!

So overall, this month’s box did have a tremendous value for only $21+ tax therefore, I shouldn’t complain. I wish I would’ve received a different color lipstick and maybe a darker shade of the shimmer powder but sometimes you aren’t always content with the shades you receive in subscription boxes. Boxycharm does not have a personalized quiz or profile like IPSY and all the products are the same for each person. Products like lipsticks and eyeshadows may have two or three different shades so you might not receive the shade that you want.

Ah geez I hear so many people talk about how great Boxycharm is, and there are good months, but this month felt really lack luster, probably because the most expensive item is an item that’s showing up in every other box this summer. :/

I completely agree! June’s box was my first month and I liked almost all the products. This month’s box is mostly a miss for me. Hopefully next month’s box is better and they don’t put in another item that has been recycled throughout most subscription services.
