Simple & Easy DIY Ariel Costume + Makeup*

I recently went to Walt Disney World for their #Disney24 event and I wanted to go as a Disney character. I really wanted to be Pocahontas but couldn’t find any clothes at the last second that would make me look the part. However, I was fortunate enough to actually have some clothes that would match the part for Ariel from The Little Mermaid. If you want to be Ariel for Halloween or for any party/event but don’t want to actually buy an expensive costume then this is what you’ll need:

  • Ariel tiara/headband (Found some options at Party City, mine)
  • Plum colored top (Bought mine at PacSun by Kirra Clothing. Found the same one on sale here)
  • Aquamarine pants/shorts (Bought mine at Forever 21)
  • Red Hairspray or a red wig (I suggest going with a wig rather than hairspray)
  • Ariel Tattoos (These are optional but either way I bought mine at Party City)
Some of the Ariel accessories I found at Party City
The Ariel tiara I chose which fit perfectly even though it was meant for children.

I had never used colored hairspray before and I never will again. I had one of the worst experiences with it! My hair is naturally really dark and curly so in order to fulfill the Ariel persona I was trying to portray I thought it’d be easier to just use a colored hairspray than buy a wig. I used three bottles of this colored hairspray from Party City. The color was intense and exactly what I wanted but application was a huge hassle. Whatever residue was left in the air from the spray would fall on the floor and it was extremely difficult to remove even with shampoo, soap, and even clorox. If you get it on your fingers immediately wash with water while it’s still wet and it’ll come off easily. Anyway, about an hour after application I noticed that the hairspray was leaving behind red powder everywhere. When I looked at my car seat all I saw was red powder!! My shirt’s collar was becoming red and so was my backpack’s straps. I was so frustrated because I could barely even touch my hair without my fingers getting tinted by the hairspray. The hairspray claims to easily wash off with shampoo…if by easily they mean with 7 different heavy washes then sure. Even after the 7th wash, there were still small areas of red that wouldn’t wash off my scalp. Throughout my day at the park, the hairspray would come off on my back and as you’ll see in the picture below the red splotches left behind. I highly do not recommend hairspray if you’re going to use it all over your hair for a long period of time. I wouldn’t recommend it at all for that matter.

Red splotches due to the heinous colored hairspray.

For makeup I thought it’d be best to add purple to the lid and do an aquamarine liner. I used the following products:

Eyes:

  • Eye Basics in Wheat by Laura Mercier
  • 24/7 Slide-On Shadow Pencil in Delinquent by Urban Decay
  • Plum from the Pro Palette 2 by Lorac
  • Selena from the Esperanza Palette by Kat Von D

  • Photoready Kajal Eye Pencil in #304 Matte Marine by Revlon
  • Grow Luscious Lashliner in #004 Emerald by Revlon
  • Ultra Pearl Mania in #14 Turquoise by NYX Cosmetics
  • Freedom System Matte Eyeshadow in 375 by Inglot
