ModCloth’s Winter 2014 Stylish Surprise Review*
*ModCloth is an online women’s clothing store and every season they do a special offer called “Stylish Surprise.” Most of their clothes are expensive so during these Stylish Surprise offers, they sell dresses, apparel, and shoes for $10 and accessories for $5. Dresses that were worth anywhere from $50-$100 you can get for $10! Seems like an amazing deal; however, here’s the catch: you don’t know what you are going to receive. You choose the size you want for dresses, apparel and shoes and just pray that you get something that will fit and is your style. This was my first Stylish Surprise so I looked through their sizing charts to see which size I should order compared to the size I am in another store as a reference. I ordered a dress, apparel, and an accessory since I was afraid of getting a repeat item or just not ordering the right size. Here is what I received:
As it seems this shipment was mostly about polka dots which isn’t really my style. I was completely disappointed because I saw so many other people receive so many cute dresses, jackets, and tops that I had high hopes for my surprise. More pictures of the dress can be found here, although it is no longer in stock just like most items that are sent out. The silhouette of the dress is lovely but it was an XS (my usual size) and it did not fit. I couldn’t move my arms because the dress was just too tight from the bust up. The blouse is an S (the smallest size they offer for apparel items) and the fit is “okay,” a little baggy on the sides but I can definitely wear it without it looking funky. Apparel items range anywhere from outerwear to tops to bottoms. I was the most upset about the accessory item because when I think of accessories I imagine jewelry, scarves, hair clips or headbands, and even socks; I DO NOT THINK ABOUT OVEN MITTS, especially banana oven mitts! I have so many pairs of oven mitts that I don’t even know what to do with these banana ones. More pictures of the mitts can be found here.
Basically, this Stylish Surprise just wasn’t for me this time around. I think I’ll keep the blouse but the dress and the oven mitts will be sold or swapped. Next time I’ll just order one dress in an S to be safe and hope for the best. Stylish Surprise really is a gamble since you never know what you’re going to get in your package.
