Boxycharm September 2014

My September Boxycharm has finally arrived! Boxycharm is a $21 monthly beauty subscription box, which is known for sending only full sized products. I’m going to try and make this post as short and sweet as possible because my organic chemistry book is calling my name. The contents of this month’s Boxycharm are the following:

  • Tarte LipSurgence lip gloss in Tipsy (Value: $19.00)
  • Coastal Scents Go Palette in Cairo (Value: $12.95)
  • NCLA Nail Lacquer in Catwalk Queen (Value: $16.00)
  • Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash Mascara – Limited Edition (Value: $19.00)
  • Hello by Harvey Prince (Value: $29.00)
  • Total Box Value: $95.95

If you’ve read some of my previous posts you know that I am not a nail polish person. I’m glad that I received this light nude shade because in our July Boxycharm we received a red nail polish. The options for nail polish were this light nude shade, a red shade, and a dark plum shade. I’ll be passing this on to my mom who enjoys receiving all my subscription box nail polishes.

Hello by Harvey Prince

Hello by Harvey Prince

This Harvey Prince fragrance is a full size, which was surprising to me because it is only 10ml, that’s pretty small! It’s infused with Meyer lemon, white grapefruit, and satsuma mandarin. This fragrance is strong at first and after a while, it becomes a bit softer. I’ve received various Harvey Prince samples before in my Birchbox subscription so I wasn’t that happy to see this but at least it’s full size. I’m glad Boxycharm is expanded and including perfumes too, hoping they include higher end brands next time though.

Tarte’s LipSurgence is one of my favorite items in this month’s box. This product definitely adds some shine to the lips and feels moisturizing. There is no overbearing scent to this lip gloss, it has a nice subtle hint of vanilla. It is a little bit sticky but far from uncomfortable. However, the shade is not as opaque as I hoped probably because it’s a lip gloss. I’ll probably use this to apply over a matte lipstick to change up my look from time to time.

Coastal Scents Go Palette in Cairo

Coastal Scents Go Palette in Cairo

I have a lot of previous experience with Coastal Scent products since I own Revealed & Revealed 2 and multiple brushes. I was happy to see this Go Palette in my box since I had never heard of them before! I received the Go Palette for Cairo; there were five palettes sent this month so there’s a wide selection. I swatched all the colors and I had hardly any fallout, the shadows were creamy, and opaque. The palette contains both shimmer shadows and matte shadows, hooray! There was only one yellow shimmer eyeshadow that wasn’t as pigmented as the rest but that’s fine with me. I like how compact this palette is, the colors are neutral so they can be used for any occasion, and I like the size of the mirror.

Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash Mascara Limited Edition

Tarina Tarantino Fleur de Lash Mascara – Limited Edition

The final item in this month’s Boxycharm is the Tarina Tarantino mascara. Boxycharm really seems to love Tarina Tarantino; this is probably the third or fourth item they’ve sent out in the past four months. I love the packaging of all of her products including this mascara. It’s sleek, sturdy, and its packaging is made out of gunmetal according to their site. If you follow me on instagram, then you know that I have fourteen mascaras still waiting to be used so this will have to go to the back of the line and wait its turn. This mascara does not have any funky shapes or bristles, just a regular ol’ dense mascara wand.

Overall, this box was great! I’ll be using everything except the nail polish as usual, duh! The value of this box is almost $100 which is a huge steal in my book. If you have any questions about Boxycharm or about the products I received this month just comment below or send me an email. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram and Twitter! Peace to the outtt!

IPSY August 2014 Overview

ipsy august 2014

IPSY August 2014

*For those of you who don’t know what IPSY is, it’s basically a beauty subscription for $10 a month and you’ll receive a mix of full size and sample size beauty products to test. Additionally, the products are tailored to your preferences based on a survey you take upon subscribing and always come in a cute bag!*

After patiently waiting over a week for this bag, it finally arrived this morning. In this month’s bag I received the following items:

  • Coastal Scents Shadow Palette Samples – Set #32 (Value: $2.60)
  • Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (Value: $5.50)
  • Cali Cosmetics Evulcano Body Lotion (Value: $4.00)
  • Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner (Value: $5.50)
  • Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo (Value: $7.83)
  • Total Bag Value: $25.43

I was surprised when my bag arrived this month because the pink bubble mailer was open! Apparently the adhesive that IPSY used to seal the mailer wasn’t strong enough to endure the travel to my house. This is the first time that it has ever happened to me and thankfully all my items were untouched and present.

Hits: Each subscriber was going to receive a sample of the Perversion Mascara or the 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eyeliner in the shade Plushie (a dark purple color). I’ve been eyeing the new Urban Decay Perversion Mascara for a while now and I’m thrilled that I received it in my bag. I’m even more grateful because I already own the eyeliner in that exact shade! I haven’t opened the sample yet since I have over ten mascaras still in their packages waiting to be used. Once I do use it, I will be sure to share the results with you guys.

Misses: Without a doubt, the Cali Cosmetics Evulcano Body Lotion is a miss for me. This body lotion contains volcanic minerals, Italian olive oil, and Sicilian lemons. This product has a strong lemon scent that I find pleasing but I already found my holy grail body lotion so I’m just going to toss this to the swap pile. Another miss was the Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo which is a liquid that adds a luminous glow to the skin. This liquid can be worn alone or mixed in with your foundation, which claims to add a dewy finish. I noticed that the product has small sparkles/shimmer infused which I personally don’t think I’d want on my face. To the swap pile this goes too!

The rest of the items are okay but nothing special. I’m indifferent towards the Coastal Scents Shadow Palette since I already own many of their eyeshadow palettes. I wish that the sample sizes were slightly larger and packaged differently. Sometimes when you reach in for a color with your brush the excess fallout mixes with another color. The Jersey Shore Lip Conditioner smells like a candy I used to eat when I was little however the name escapes me. The scent is strong and does linger on the lips for a while but at least the formula is moisturizing. I don’t mind receiving lip balms since I tend to go through a single tube within a few weeks.

This month’s bag was not the cutest in my opinion and the material that it’s made out of is similar to the one used to make inflatable pool toys. It even smells like a pool toy! I think they could have chosen a nicer design since a new school year is starting and this month’s theme is “Beauty Schooled.” All in all, the value of the bag was double what I paid and I at least will be using three out of the five items. Not the best IPSY bag but certainly not the worst one either. If you have any questions about IPSY just comment down below or email me and if you’re interested in subscribing just click the referral button down below. Peace to the outttt!

Birchbox August 2014 Overview

August 2014 Birchbox

August 2014 Women’s Birchbox

Birchbox is a monthly subscription box that has both a Women’s box and a Men’s box. The Women’s box is $10 a month that sends beauty samples and sometimes even lifestyle samples; some past lifestyle samples are granola bars and vitamin gummies. The Men’s box is $20 a month and includes grooming samples and lifestyle samples. I have seen some Men’s box include wallets, aftershave, and even ties!

This month Birchbox allowed its Women’s box subscribers to choose one out of four makeup items to be featured in their box or choose a standard “Everygirl Box.” They sent an email when it was time to make your selection. I had positive experiences with Laura Geller products before thus I decided to choose the Cool Lids Cream Eyeshadow.

august 2014 birchbox

Women’s Birchbox August  2014 selection options

The interesting thing about Birchbox is that there is an incredible amount of box combinations. I always have a hard time finding someone with the same box as me, which is somewhat hard to believe. The only thing that I’ve noticed about Birchbox that bothers me is that they do tend to send samples from the same brands. Back in April, which was my first box, I received a Marcelle BB cream. I cancelled after April and resubbed in late July and guess who made a reappearance in my box: none other than Marcelle but this time it was a 8 in 1 Power Serum. Contents of my August box are the following:

  • Harvey Prince Ageless Body Creme (Value: $1.10)
  • Laura Geller Beauty Cool Lids Cream Eyeshadow in Silver Sands (Value: $12.42)
  • Neil George Shampoo (Value: $4.50)
  • Neil George Conditioner (Value: $4.50)
  • nügg Beauty Revitalizing Mask (Value: $3.00)
  • Total Box Value: $25.52

I am acquainted with Harvey Prince because I happened to receive one of their perfume samples in my April Birchbox. As you can see this is just another example of what I mean by Birchbox sending repeat brand samples. Anyway, the Ageless Body Creme is a decent size for a subscription box although it is only worth about one dollar. It is infused with a grapefruit fragrance and claims to leave your skin “silky-smooth.” I have way too many body creams already so I will be dumping this in my swap pile.

The Neil George products are generously sized samples in my opinion. They both contain Indian Gooseberry fruit extracts, which is what makes them smell so pleasant. I like how Birchbox always sends the shampoo and conditioner together but I would’ve preferred something else. The downside of receiving shampoo and conditioner samples is that they take up two out of the five samples you receive instead of just one. I will be swapping these as well since I am trying to use hair products that are free of sulfate, silicone, and paraben.

I’m really excited about the revitalizing mask because it claims to hydrate and replenish dull skin. I’ve been using a heavier dose of Benzoyl Peroxide and my skin can use the extra hydrating. I wish the sample for this mask were larger so that you are able to use it more than once; this way it would be easier to make a valid conclusion on whether or not it works for your skin.

laura geller cream eyeshadow silver sands

Laura Geller Cool Lids Cream Eyeshadow in Silver Sands

The Laura Geller cream eyeshadow was probably the highlight of this month’s box. I absolutely love this metallic silver shade! You do need to wait a minute or two for the eyeshadow to dry completely, if not it will blend away to an extremely sheer shimmer. The great thing I noticed about this product was that once it dries, it does not budge. This cream shadow is versatile and can be used as a base for a powder eyeshadow or glitter, worn alone on the lid, blended with other colors, or even as an inner corner highlight. The sample size is equivalent to 65% of the full sized product and is valued at more than what I paid for the box. *amazing!*

Birchbox is always a hit or miss for me and it seems that although this box had decent sized samples I only liked two out of the five that were sent. If you are just getting acquainted with subscription boxes and don’t mind seeing the same brand every so often, then this might be for you. Birchbox points system is hands down the best one I’ve encountered and is the easiest to accumulate points. You receive 10 points for your initial subscription but sometimes there are codes floating around that will earn you 100 points on your initial subscription.

*If you are a new subscriber you may use the codes: BBPLUS100 OR bbstore100 to receive 100 points with your subscription*

100 points = $10 in the Birchbox store and you can receive 10 points for reviewing each sample you receive in your box. That’s easily 50 points a month just by completing their short review form! There are hundreds of items in their stores and they all come with free shipping. If you would like to subscribe you can use my referral button down below. If you have any questions just email me or leave me a comment. Thanks for reading, peace to the out!

Sample Society August 2014 Overview

sample society august 2014

August 2014 Sample Society!

Sample Society is a $15 monthly beauty subscription box created by Allure. This box was revamped in July and seems to have improved in quality. The box comes with five deluxe samples, a booklet explaining each product in depth, and a coupon code for $10 off a $50 purchase on Beautybar.com.

As soon as I saw Too Faced’s Melted Liquid Lipstick in Sample Society’s sneak peek last month, I jumped on the wagon and subscribed immediately. I have been convincing myself not to buy the full sized product since it was released but finally this was my chance to try the lipstick without paying the full price. I was actually pleasantly surprised with this box; before the revamping, most of the boxes were skincare heavy so I was never interested in subbing. However, it seems that they are including more makeup items in each box so they might reel me in longer than expected. This month’s box included:

  • Oribe Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse (Value $21.50)
  • Ciaté Mini Paint Pots nail polish in Cha Cha Cha (Value $8)
  • Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Peony (Value $8.40)
  • Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice (Value $7.86)
  • Kate Somerville Dilo Oil (Value $6.50)
  • Total Box Value: $52.26
Ciate Mini Cha Cha Cha

Ciaté Mini Paint Pots nail polish in Cha Cha Cha

Although, I highly dislike nail polish I have to say that the Ciaté Mini Paint Pots nail polish has a lovely color. Cha Cha Cha is a neon shade even though in person it doesn’t look as bright in the bottle. I will be passing this along but for those who like bright attention seeking nail polish shades this is the color for you. This sample is really mini, like the name suggests, and the length of the bottle itself is about the same as my thumb.  If I were a nail polish lover, I do not think I’d buy this product because it’s just ridiculously small for its price point.

The Oribe Surfcomber mousse costs more than the box itself *thumbs up* and is a travel sized item. I’ve never heard of this brand before but I’m excited to see how it helps my unruly curly hair. According to Allure, its best to use this product with your hair dried but I mean ya’ll know leaving curly hair to dry naturally leads to a mess of frizzyness or what I like to call Mufasa hair. I will try it both ways, wet and dry, and see which gives the best result.

Melted Peony Too Faced Swatch

Melted Peony

Too Faced’s Melted Peony wasn’t the baby pink shade I expected but rather a dusty rose shade. This dries quickly on the lips, is not sticky, and has a nice shine to it like a lip gloss. The applicator for this lipstick is unique because it’s a sponge tip. I’m not really fond of it since it seems that it would soak up some of the product but besides that, I like everything about the lipstick thus far. This product does come in nine other shades so if you’re interested in picking one up but Peony isn’t your ideal shade, you do have more to choose from. If I continue to like this lipstick, you can bet I’ll be headed to Sephora to buy some more including Melted Berry!

Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara is a fiber mascara that is petroleum-free. I’ve never tried a fiber mascara before but I have heard a plethora of positive and negative reviews which makes me think it’s basically a hit or miss kind of product. I do have about ten unopened tubes of mascara at the moment so this mascara will be last in line to be tested. The wand is “normal”, dense, and there is no unique pattern to the bristles. The only thing I found interesting about this mascara so far is the packaging since it isn’t a round tube-like container.

Jane Iredale Longest Lash MascaraJane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara

The Kate Somerville Dilo Oil restorative treatment is a face oil that is supposed to repair the skin, increase moisture, and help with firming. This isn’t a product I would willingly go out and buy because I just don’t use a product like this in my routine. I have extremely sensitive skin, so I’m picky with my skincare products therefore I’ll be passing this product to someone else.Kate Somerville Dilo Oil

I will be using three out of the five deluxe samples which is pretty good for my first Sample Society box. The total box value is beyond what I originally thought it would be and for someone who likes nail polish and oils in their skincare routine this would have been an amazing “well-rounded” box. I can’t wait to see the sneak peeks for September…did I just say September? Time is passing by so fast it’s unbelievable but anyways, I’m hoping next month’s box turns out to be just as nice as this one or even better. Peace to the outttt.

August 2014 Boxycharm Overview

August 2014 Boxycharm

August 2014 Boxycharm

Finally my August Boxycharm has arrived and I can honestly say that I am pleased with the contents of this month’s box. Boxycharm is a $21 monthly beauty subscription box, which is known for sending only full sized products. The only thing that I wish Boxycharm had is a beauty profile so that you can help them pick which shades of eyeshadow or lipstick to send you. The items that I received this month were the following:

  • Enter Pronoun Blowtorch Bronzer (Value: $35)
  • Tarina Tarantino Conditioning Lip Sheen in Showroom (Value: $22)
  • ModelCo Cheek + Lips Tint in Rosy Red (Value: $22)
  • Morphe Brushes Powder Brush (Value: $19.99)
  • OFRA Cosmetics Eyeliner in Black (Value: $13)
  • Total Box Value: $111.99
Tarina Tarantino Conditioning Lip Sheen in Showroom

Tarina Tarantino Conditioning Lip Sheen in Showroom

Let me start off by saying that I did not like the shade I received for Tarina Tarantino’s Conditioning Lip Sheen. I received another nude shade, which I really don’t find flattering for my skin tone. The formula is heavy, glides smoothly, and is super creamy but it seems to accentuate every single line on your lips. It could be due to the formula or maybe that only happens with the light shades. The packaging of the lip sheen is sleek but heavy since it is made of metal and it is not that easy to open. When I tried opening the tube, it took me longer than expected and I accidentally twisted the bottom so the lip sheen got squashed inside; be careful opening yours!

The tint after trying to remove it

The ModelCo Cheek + Lip Tint did make up for receiving the nude shade lip sheen though. This lip tint stains and is incredibly difficult to remove! I swatched the tint with my finger on the back of my hand and was unsuccessful at removing it with all of the following: Benefit’s They’re Real Remover, Baby Oil, and Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover wipes. When the tint comes out of the tube it looks black and very similar to Revlon’s Black Cherry but when blended on the skin and applied to the lips the colors sheers out slightly and looks lighter.

Enter Pronoun Blowtorch bronzer packaging is heavy and too bulky for my taste. I do like that it has a mirror but the material that the container is made out allows every fingerprint to be clearly seen which slightly bothers me. The bronzer itself is light and has an orange hint to it.

Enter Pronoun Blowtorch Bronzer swatched.

Morphe Brushes Powder brush is soft and dense. I have never tried their brushes but I have read multiple positive reviews. I would have preferred an eyeshadow brush instead because I have various powder brushes that I don’t reach out for a lot when doing my makeup. The OFRA eyeliner is a normal wooden pencil, it has a creamy formula, and has good pigmentation. I did watch a video by Jen Luv’s Reviews on Youtube where she received an OFRA eyebrow pencil with a crack in the middle so every time she would sharpen the pencil it would break. I noticed that my eyeliner also has a crack in the middle so I’m hoping that when the time comes to sharpen the pencil it doesn’t break.

Overall, August’s box was a hit for me excluding the nude lip sheen. If you have any questions about Boxycharm or this month’s box just comment down below or email me! If you would like to subscribe to Boxycharm you can find my referral link down below. Until next time, peace to the out!
