How To: Winged Eyeliner [Tape Method]*

girlwithglamJanuary 11, 2017

Have you always wanted that perfect winged liner but you can never get that straight line? Well let me give you this simple tip, use tape! Let’s go step-by-step to an easy method to get the perfect wing:

  1. Find some Scotch tape and put it on the back of your hand. You want to lift the tape a few times off your hand to get rid of most of the tackiness. This helps to prevent the tape from tugging on your skin when you remove it at the end.
  2.  Align the tape at the angle you want your liner to have but make sure you keep it away from your waterline for safety reasons. Make sure both eyes have the same angle, we don’t want two different looking wings!
  3. Get your eyeliner out, can be gel, liquid, or pencil. I personally prefer liquid and gel liner for my winged liner. My go to liquid liners are Sephora’s Classic Line 24HR Felt Eyeliner, Lancôme’s Grandiôse Bendable Liquid Eyeliner, and Maybelline’s  Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner. My favorite gel liners are Inglot’s AMC Eyeliner Gel in 77 and Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner.
  4. Start the line from your waterline and then up the side of the tape until where you want your liner to end. I usually stop halfway between my eyebrow and the waterline, except in this tutorial where I took it up much higher for demonstration purposes. If you take it up too high you can always fix it later with concealer or a makeup wipe, which there will be a tutorial up in a few days.
  5. Once the line is done you want to branch out the second line of your liner. You can start the second line from whichever point you want. The closer to the waterline you branch out the longer your liner’s tail will be. I try to branch the second line right at the end or right before the end of my liner as you can see in picture number 5. The point of this second line is to connect it back to your lid to make that wing/triangle shape.
  6. Bring that second line diagonally down towards your lid while creating that triangle outline.
  7. Line the rest of your upper lashline and remember to try and keep the line thinner as you go towards the inner corner (area closer to your nose). If you keep the line thinner it will help create an illusion that the eye is lifted and larger. You do not have to go all the way into your inner corner if you do not want to. I take the liner to different lengths of my lid depending on the look I am trying to achieve that day.
  8. Fill in the liner completely and make sure there are no empty spaces.
  9. Your liner should be completely done, just double check for any edges you may want to go over and make sure both eyes are similar in thickness.
  10. Remove tape and voila! You have the perfect winged liner.

Hope this helps any beginners or people who struggle getting straight lines! If you do not want to put tape on your skin, you can use a tissue and hold it in place while you follow all the steps. If you have any questions just leave them down below. After using this method for a while I was able to do my liner without tape and achieve almost the exact same result. So don’t give up and keep practicing because we all know winged liner takes time to master. Until next time, peace out!

P.S. For this tutorial I used Lancôme’s Grandiôse Bendable Liquid Eyeliner in Black.
