Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner & Makeup Remover Review

girlwithglamJuly 12, 2014

Hello my wonderful followers! It has been a while since my last post and the reason for that is that I have been drowning in tests the past couple of days but finally they’re over! I went to Ulta a few weeks ago and picked up Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner and Remover. I was dying to test the eyeliner ever since I heard Benefit was creating the product. Initially, I only wanted to try the eyeliner but Ulta was having a promotion for any $40 Benefit purchase you’d get the Glamboree Deluxe Sample Set and of course, I couldn’t resist. Therefore, I splurged and bought both the eyeliner and the remover. The sample set includes: They’re Real Mascara, The Porefessional, Hoola Bronzer, & Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss. I’ll probably do a review on those products later on when I get the time to test them out.

Now, I have seen various reviews on They’re Real Push-Up Liner before purchasing the product and they were all controversial. Some people loved it and others really did not think it was as great as Benefit hyped it up to be. While testing the liner I did not take any of the other reviews I previously saw into consideration. They were all basically erased from my mind so there are no biases or preconceived expectations!

First, I want to talk about the packaging of both products. The liner is a perfect size for travel because instead of taking two items now you are only carrying around one item, which I find is a plus for me. The liner’s cap is a twist “on and off” style thus insuring that your cap will not fall off inside your purse or bookbag. The makeup remover is extremely sleek, fits nicely in the palm of your hand, and has a twistable cap too. Both products have a nice minimalistic design that I absolutely love. I used to do graphic design projects in high school so I am a huge sucker for cute & innovative designs.

They’re Real Remover

They’re Real Remover claims to remove “waterproof eye makeup without tugging the delicate eye area.” I usually just use baby oil to remove my eye makeup even waterproof mascara or eyeliner. The baby oil completely removes all traces of the eye makeup so I’d thought it’d be awesome to compare it to this remover. They’re Real Remover has a nice cream consistency almost like a moisturizer but I’d say a little bit heavier. This remover is unscented so that’s great for anyone who has any allergies or sensitivity. As for removing eye makeup I’d say this remover is on-par with baby oil. It does remove waterproof eyeliner and mascara but it isn’t a product that is a must have for me. I tested out the removers by wearing a full makeup look with tons of eyeshadow & etc so I used They’re Real Remover on one eye and baby oil on the other eye. I felt that I needed to use more remover to take off the same amount of eye makeup than the baby oil but then again baby oil is a liquid. However, they took about the same amount of time to remove. For the person who just uses eyeliner daily this remover may last you up to a year or more so you’d get your money’s worth for sure. I don’t think I will be repurchasing this product especially since it’s $18 meanwhile baby oil is only around $2 and it provides me with the same results, if not better.

They’re Real Push-Up Liner is unique for many reasons starting with the AccuFlex Tip that is supposed to “hug your lashline from corner to corner.” The AccuFlex Tip is soft and extremely flexible. While using this liner I found that this kind of tip did help give me that sharp line that we all want with a cat eye or winged eyeliner. I personally did not see that it “hugged” my lashline at all. The way the tip is shaped is supposed to push your lashes out of the way to really get to your lashline but it just didn’t convince me. The product itself has a gel consistency, thus the reason why it would be replacing your gel liner and brush, duhz. In order to get to the product you need to turn the bottom of the pen. I found that one or two clicks was enough for each eye. The product does come out creamy but dries up too fast and is difficult to build up. If you start to go in to try to fix any details or to build up your line the liner starts to “flake” and becomes textured in an unattractive manner. Additionally, it takes time to get used to the product because the first time I attempted to make a cat eye my wing came out perfect but as soon as started going towards the inner corner of my eye my line was just TOO fat. I looked like I was Egyptian or something because it was excessively thick and I had to remove all the makeup & start over, ugh. I was so mad. Anyway, after a few tries I did get the hang of it and found that if you bring the liner to be perpendicular with your eyelid (sorry for sounding like a geometry freak) you get a lot more control of the dispersal of the gel. The liner is difficult to rub off once it is completely dry. I did notice that if you try to rub the liner off as soon as you apply it, the liner transfers to your finger but it doesn’t really smear but instead it just continues to apply to your eye, if that makes sense. The color is matte black but it’s just as black as any other gel liner or liquid liner I’ve tried. Below you’ll also find a look during the weekend where I used the Push-Up Liner.

This eyeliner is long lasting as it claims and is waterproof but you DO NOT need to buy They’re Real Remover to take this eyeliner off. I easily removed this liner with my magical baby oil and Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover wipes. This liner retails for $24 which is expensive compared to Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner that retails from $7.99-$9.99 depending on the store. I still haven’t decided whether or not I’d repurchase this eyeliner because with more practice I feel that I would use this liner daily if I can make my wings within one or two minutes as I’m used to doing with my liquid liners. The other reasons I would repurchase this product would be that you don’t need to use an eyeliner brush AND since it has a cap the gel will not dry up. I have a Bobbi Brown black gel liner (retail value $24 too) that I bought a little over a year ago, barely used, and it completely dried up after about 3 months of purchasing!! For $24 I need an eyeliner that will dry up that quickly because money doesn’t grow on trees, you know!

For those of you in the market for a new gel liner or want to try something different than check out They’re Real Push-Up liner and if you’re in need of a waterproof makeup remover I strongly suggest buying a travel sized bottle of baby oil at your local supermarket before trying They’re Real Remover. Hope you all enjoyed this review I know it was a little long but I just wanted to make sure to touch over all the main details I noticed & thought were important to know. Let me know if you have purchased these products already, what do you think about them, and if they were a hit or miss below. Peace to the out!
